Air Duct Cleaning

What is air duct cleaning?

It is the cleaning of various heating, ventilation and cooling system components. The components of the heating and cooling system include metal supply and return air ducts (plenums), registers, grilles, diffusers, heat exchangers, cooling coils, condensate drain pans and air handling system. See diagram below. Other ventilation components include fan motors / housing and dryer venting.

Why should I get my air ducts cleaned?

Reason #1

Heating and cooling system components can become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and other microbiological growth (mold, fungal spores due to moisture) if the system is not installed, maintained and operating correctly. Ductwork that is dirty and moist provides a perfect breeding ground for harmful bacterial and molds. If your components are dirty, think about what's living inside.

Reason #2

When your heating and cooling system is dirty, this can increase your utility bills and cause other expensive household problems.

  • A small build up of dust, dirt and debris can reduce your heating and cooling system efficiency by more than 20 per cent. Dirt forces your system to work harder and use more energy.
  • Premature failure of expensive heating and cooling system components will occur forcing you to pay for new parts and labour early.
  • Dust may build up on your furniture causing premature wear and tear.

Reason #3

What about your health? The dust, pollen and contaminants trapped in your heating and cooling system mentioned above may contribute to poor health conditions. This may contribute or enhance the following conditions:

  • Allergies
  • Dry or Itchy Skin
  • Asthma
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Emphysema
  • Sinus Problems
  • Respiratory Ailments

How do I know that I need duct cleaning?

Firstly, if you answer "yes" to any of the following questions, then you should have your system professionally cleaned.

  • Do you notice dust on the furniture shortly after cleaning?
  • Do you have a newly constructed home? (may contain debris from construction in the ductwork)
  • Does anyone in the house have allergies, asthma, or other respiratory problems?
  • Does anyone in your family suffer from headaches, nasal congestion, or other sinus problems at night or in the morning?
  • Is there or was there ever a smoker in the house?
  • Do you have or was there ever a dog, cats or other pets in the house?
  • Do you notice "musty" or "stale" odors when the furnace or air conditioner runs?
  • Does it seem like there is not enough air flow coming from your vents?
  • Is your furnace equipped only with a standard throw-away fiberglass filter?
  • Are your ducts infested with vermin, e.g. (rodents or insects)
  • Is there visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system

Secondly, there are a few things that you can check yourself with a flashlight. Look for dirt and debris.

  • Check your air furnace air filter. Is it full of dirt, dust and debris?
  • Look for dirt, dust and debris inside your return air ducts by looking through the grills.
  • Look for dirt, dust and debris inside the supply vents by pulling out the registers.
  • Look for any moisture in your ductwork.

If you find dirt in some of these areas, then you should have your air duct system professionally cleaned.

How often should I get my ducts cleaned?

It is recommended that cleaning should be done each year and a half to two years. New houses and houses with recent construction should be cleaned as soon as the construction is finished since there is debris contained in the air ducts (such as sawdust and concrete dust). This will help reduce health issues and heating and cooling system malfunctions.

How is it done?

We use specialized tools to dislodge dirt and other debris in ducts, then vacuum them out with a high-powered vacuum system with contains high quality filters.
