Do you need an electrical contracting license in order to perform electrical work?

Yes, law requires an electrical contracting license in order to conduct electrical work. As of January 1, 2007 no person shall operate an Electrical Contracting Business in Ontario without first obtaining an Electrical Contractor License issues by ECRA/ESA.

Is a fuse panel safe? Should I upgrade to breakers?

Fuses and fuse panels were originally designed to protect circuits from overloaded circuits and/or short circuits that potentially could lead to fires. As technology has advanced over the years, we use more appliances, tools and equipment in our home or business that cycle on and off many times a day. This causes screw-on type fuses to become loose over time in its holder. The loose connection develops over heating and arcing (burn marks). As a result, burned or melted fuse holders, fuses and/or components in the fuse panel can cause fires. Electricity always flows in the path of the weakest link and this causes the burned marks.
We recommend upgrading to breakers to eliminate the hazards that are caused from the screw-on type fuse panels. The breakers are properly sized for the wire and loads on each circuit. You don't have to worry about improper sized fuses or loose fuses and there is also the convenience of never having to change a fuse again. Most fuse panels don't allow for expansion and people always have a pony panels. We consolidate everything into one breaker panel and there is lots of space left for future devices that you may want to add.

Is Aluminum wiring dangerous?

The fact of the matter is that #12 AWG aluminum wire is compliant with the electrical code and was commonly used in homes in the 1970s. The problem, however, was the poor electrical connections and poor workmanship that was conducted at the time of installing this wire. As a result, loose connections are normally found and in time lead to arcing and overheating of circuits and devices such as this receptacle below. Aluminum wiring can be safe if it is connected properly.
Flickering of lights and periodic power failures is usually a sign of poor aluminum wiring. Turning lights, appliances or anything plugging into a receptacle on and off over time causes breakdown of electrical devices such as receptacles and switches etc. A large arc can cause a blue spark that resulted in the damage in the photo above.

How can Aluminum wiring problems be fixed?

All Electricall recommends that you have us inspect and re-connect all aluminum wired receptacles, lighting, switches etc. in your home. We can upgrade your system to copper devices by copper pig tailing each device. The other option is to replace the aluminum devices such as a receptacle or switch with a new aluminum rated device. We ensure that every connection is properly made and protected the wiring by adding an anti-oxidizing material to each connection. We will have it inspected and certified by the Electrical Safety Authority. You won't have aluminum wiring problems or potential fire hazards after we are finished.

What does GFCI mean and why are GFCI receptacles used?

GFCI stands for "ground fault circuit interrupter". It basically is a receptacle with a built in breaker for your safety. It prevents you from getting an electric shock by monitoring the current flow entering and exiting the GFCI. If there is a "ground fault" or current leakage, it immediately trips the internal breaker, which protects you from an electrical shock. These devices are required by the electrical safety code to be put in places such as a bathroom or kitchen to protect you.

It is a unit that monitors and controls your heating and cooling system products. You can set a temperature and it helps maintain that temperature. A programmable thermostat allows you to program periods of time that you want a specific temperature and your furnace or air conditioner will turn on and off accordingly. This saves you energy when you are not at home.

PSR stands for Pre-Start Health and Safety Review. A Pre-Start Health and Safety Review includes a written report on the construction, addition or installation of a new apparatus, structure, protective element or process, or modifications to an existing apparatus, structure, protective element or process. The report details the measures (steps, actions or engineering controls) necessary to bring the construction, addition, installation or modification into compliance with the applicable provisions of the Regulation for Industrial Establishments.

Home Owners Energy Savings Tips

  • Install ceiling fans and use them to supplement to air conditioning – ceiling fans generally use very little electricity. Make sure your fan is blowing air downwards in summer.
  • To save money on heating costs, reduce the temperature of your home a few degrees at night and when you're away.
  • Keep blinds, shades and drapes closed during the hottest part of the day in the summer.
  • Use area rugs on cold floors – if your feet are cold, your body will feel cold.
  • If you feel cool, put on a sweater rather than simply turning up the thermostat.
  • Clean or replace the air filter on your furnace every month to improve efficiency.
  • To save more on central AC costs, try cooling your home to only 24°C or 25°C instead of the low 20's. Each degree below 26°C will noticeably increase your electricity use!
  • Turn off unnecessary lights in the house.

Small Business Energy Savings Tips

Heating and Cooling

  • Close the doors. An open door may entice some customers into your store but it increases
    your electricity bills.
  • Consider getting a heat recovery system to reduce heat lost from air exiting your building
    through the ventilation system exhaust. You could save up to 60-70 % of heat lost through air ventilation with an air-to-air heat exchanger, particularly for kitchen exhaust ventilation.
  • Open blinds or window coverings to heat your building and use daylighting when sufficient, and close them to keep the sun's heat out when you have the air conditioning turned on.

Lighting

  • Replace older T12 technology lights with newer T8 or T5 lights. T8 is 40% more efficient than T12. T5 is 51% more efficient than T12. Think of the energy savings. Shave at least 25% off your lighting costs. Give us a call to find out how we can help you save on your energy bills!
  • As a lower cost (but not as efficient) alternative to full replacement, remove unneeded light bulbs in areas with excess lighting levels such as near windows, in hallways, and in areas with no furniture. Adjust lighting levels by removing either the two outermost light bulbs or the inner pair from each four-bulb fluorescent fixture and keep a uniform lighting pattern for the ceiling. Save even more by purchasing lower wattage bulbs!
  • Reflectors on fluorescent tube light fixtures increase the effectiveness of lighting, often allowing for lower wattage and/or fewer bulbs.
  • Adding occupancy sensors in areas such as bathrooms, store rooms and warehouses can save up to 30 per cent on associated energy costs.
  • Cut the wattage of recessed downlights by replacing incandescent pot lights with a compact fluorescent light bulb. You will also reduce the load on your air conditioning. Also, be aware that pot lights can trap much of the light the bulb produces, making them inherently inefficient for providing general ambient lighting. Pot lights in ceilings below roofs present another concern. They must be properly airsealed, insulated, and at the same time kept separated from the insulation in order to both be safe and not allow excessive loss of heating/cooling from the building.
    Special sealing boxes are available for this purpose.
  • Replace traditional EXIT signs (which by law must be lit whenever the building is occupied, and are often lit 24 hours a day) with newer light emitting diode (LED) signs. You'll be replacing an energy waster of up to 30 watts with as little as 2 watts, and the LED bulbs can last 10 years without needing replacement!
  • During the holiday season, consider decorating you business with LED lights and reduce energy costs for holiday lighting by up to 85%!

Electrical Safety Tips

How to replace a fuse safely

When a fuse blows, always replace it with one of the same type and amperage rating. Never replace it with one rated higher. If the fuse is marked 15-amps, use a 15-amp fuse again. Higher ratings can cause wire to melt if the electricity flow exceeds the wire's rating. When you need to change a blown fuse, shut off all power before touching the fuse and be sure you're standing on dry ground.

How to reset a circuit breaker safely

When a circuit is carrying more current than is safe, the breaker switches to reset. This is usually the middle position of the breaker. Most breakers have to be pushed to Off and then to On after the circuit trips.

Testing your GFCI receptacle for safety operation

Your GFCI receptacles should be checked monthly to ensure that they are functioning correctly. Make sure it is reset, plug a small appliance in it and turn it on, then press the test button. The appliance should turn off. Press the reset button and the appliance should turn on. This means the GFCI is operating safely. If it is performing as described, please don't hesitate to call us so we can help you get it replaced.

Ensure cover plates on your switches and receptacles are in good condition

If you have missing, broken or cracked cover plates on your outlets in your home, you should have them replaced. Cover plates protect you and your family from getting a potential electrical shock.

Loose, cracked or broken outlets, switches, and fixtures should be repaired

If you have loose, cracked or broken outlets, switches or ceiling fixtures in your home, they should be repaired or replaced. This can cause a potential shock or fire hazard to you and your family. Loose outlets can wiggle around and short against an outlet box, which can cause an arc flash. Loose ceiling fixtures may fall and injure someone and should be repaired.

Smoke detectors

Test your smoke detector once a month to ensure it is functioning correctly. Press the test button and it should go into the alarm state. If you have a hard-wired system, all of the smoke alarms in the house should beep simultaneously when one is tested. If you have battery powered smoke alarms, test each one on every floor of your home. If they don't work properly, you should get them replaced immediately
